Travel Tips (how to find us)

Cordiner’s Land is located in the heart of Edinburgh's historic Old Town, in the World Heritage Site area.

It is at the street address 70 West Port, the road running straight through the Grassmarket which becomes ‘ West Port’ at the South West corner of the Grassmarket. Cordiner's Land is on the south side of West Port, just down from the Lady Lawson Street intersection. It is opposite the bus stop, and between the bookshops.

Please come to the street address 70 West Port, it has a dark green door with ‘Cordiner's Land' sign above.

Here’s how you find us if you are arriving:

Approx 7mins to West Port > Walk along the first block of Lothian Road, turn left into Castle Terrace, turn right at Spittal Street, then sharp left up Lady Lawson Street. Turn left down West Port, number 70 is on the south side (right-hand side, opposite the bus stop), between the antiquarian bookshops. (Pavement is reasonably level, but is uphill at Lady Lawson Street, if you are wheeling luggage.)

Approx 20 mins through Old Town (not recommended if carrying heavy luggage) > Walk south along Waverley Bridge, turn right UP Market St, cross road & go UP Mound Place, into Ramsay Lane. Turn right towards Castle, climb down steps on left side (near entrance to Castle Esplanade) which go down to Johnson Terrace. Cross road and go down steps to Grassmarket. Turn right and walk to end of Grassmarket, cross King's Stables Rd & walk a few paces to the left to West Port, turn right and walk up West Port, continue until road widens. No 70 is on the left (just past the map shop, antique shop, and then the bookshop).

BY CAR: Use the Transport Direct website click for travel directions (enter the destination postcode EH1 2LF) to get travel information including trip times, trip distances, maps, printable step by step driving directions, road delay tips & exact locations of car parks etc. OR use the MAP tab on the left hand side to use 'google maps' for road maps of and to  Edinburgh. Use the '+' and '-' buttons, or lever, to zoom in/out for greater road details, including one-way arrows.  See ‘Before You Arrive/Car Parking' section for other details of car parking options and prices within the immediate area.

BY AIR: Travel options from Edinburgh Airport to city centre:

Airport Taxis/Cabs: Approx 20mins journey time, fares around £14-£17. There is a designated TAXI RANK outside, straight ahead, as you exit the airport arrivals terminal. Tell the taxi driver you want to go to 70 West Port, just down from the corner of Lady Lawson Street, past the new building.

There are 2 types of taxis, same rates apply ...
1) AIRPORT TAXIS which are only licensed to accept fares at the airport, but are NOT permitted to pick up fares from the street in Edinburgh, even for trips to the airport. Most of the Airport Taxis are privately owned regular cars, with luggage storage in the rear trunk, although they do also have vans available for up to 8 Passengers – go to the other 'TAXI' area, to the left as you exit the arrivals terminal, and tell the taxi receptionist if you need a larger vehicle.

2) EDINBURGH TAXIS can accept fares within Edinburgh and TO the airport at any time, and can accept fares from the TAXI RANK at the airport (walk straight ahead, across the road, as you exit the terminal). These cabs are spacious and also have room for some luggage in the passenger section and front of the cab, which carries up to 5-6 passengers. Usually taxis are readily available, but if there are no taxis on the rank, or there is a long queue, you may prefer to PHONE for an AIRPORT PICKUP and an Edinburgh taxi will collect you. In this situation they have a special area for picking up passengers (through the car park building to the far side), so ask for clear directions if you decide to phone or pre-book in advance of your travel, there is a £2 surcharge for booked taxis. Phone after luggage collection: (0131)-229-2468 ‘Central Taxis’ OR (0131)-228-1211 ‘City Cabs’.

Airport Airlink Shuttle Buses: Have a designated service bay at the airport, outside arrivals terminal, from which they provide express shuttle service to the city centre, approx 25 mins, adult fares £6pp return, £3.50pp one-way. Discounts for children, Alight at West End of Princes Street (Shandwick Place Bus Stop) and either take a taxi, fare £2.50-£3, or walk.

BY RAIL: The WAVERLEY STATION is the main Edinburgh Station and is about 10-15 mins walk away. The taxi ride costs around £3.50-£5 from taxi queuing point at the station. (Taxi rank is undercover, on the road which runs through to the car parking area at the rear of station terminus.) Frequent buses available in Princes Street, see bus stop details below, or walk.

The HAYMARKET STATION is about 15-20 mins walk from Cordiner's Land. The station is at the bottom of Morrison Street. The short taxi ride costs approx £3.50-£4. The problem with using this station is that there are a lot of stairs to climb when you get off the train (not easy with luggage) and also, sometimes there might be a wait for taxis to arrive on the open-air taxi ranks (particularly in wet weather). Buses are available from Haymarket, or walk straight up Morrison Street, cross Lothian Road into Bread Street, continue along into the top of West Port. Cross Lady Lawson Street, passing the large new building on the south east corner. Cordiner's Land is the old stone building just down past the dominant new building of the College of Art. 70 West Port is between the bookshops. (A taxi from the Waverley Station is most convenient on arrival!)

BY BUS: From St. Andrew’s Square bus station a short taxi ride costs approx £4-£4.50, but public buses go to Lothian Road, one way fare is £1.20. Ask the driver if he stops before the corner of Castle Terrace. Follow directions above for walking to Cordiner's Land. (Bus Stops contain details of bus numbers, routes & times.)

Have a safe journey, we look forward to welcoming you!
