Public Parking & Traffic Troubles
When staying in Cordiner's Land or Lothian House you will not need a car for sightseeing within Edinburgh city centre, as most attractions are within easy walking distance and public transport is excellent. Parking in Edinburgh can be quite troublesome, particularly in the summer, but here are some tips to help you.
WARNING: Traffic Wardens (locally referred to as 'blue meanies') are plentiful & vigilant in the city centre due to traffic congestion. They do NOT issue warnings, do NOT negotiate and NO exception is made for visitors!
Street Parking There are many one-way streets in the city centre. A street directory is available in the apartment, for use during your stay. You MUST NOT PARK on yellow lines until after 6.30pm, when it becomes legal to park free in side streets on SINGLE YELLOW LINES ONLY until 8am. ‘Pay & Display’ and meters apply from 8.30am-6.30pm. Greenways, double red lines & double yellow lines=NO PARKING ANYTIME! Vehicles ARE towed away.
At non-peak traffic times it is possible to pull up outside the front door of Cordiner's Land briefly (or across the road in the upper section of the bus stop area), to drop off your luggage, and it is safer if the driver remains with the vehicle. We recommend you do NOT leave your luggage unattended anywhere – nor your vehicle! Free street parking is available overnight, and from about 6.30pm Saturday-8am Monday, in the city centre on the single yellow lines. Some unrestricted street parking is available FREE, outside the city centre areas. Always check signs carefully, as you WILL get a parking fine if you park outside permitted times/areas.
Public Car Parks Recommended for convenient easy access & vehicle safety. The closest public car park is in Castle Terrace, which is just at the bottom of Lady Lawson Street and therefore only 2-3 minutes walk to Cordiner's Land. Another public car park is Thistle Parking, just behind Lothian House, in Semple Street (on the left hand side, under the large Scottish Widows building). It offers undercover secured facilities. It is only a 5 minute walk from Cordiner's Land and you will pass many convenient shops on this route.
Parking is also available close by at The Princes Exchange Car Park in Riego Street, Tollcross. (**For cheaper parking rates, there is an open-air car park near the corner of Morrison Street & Morrison Link, which has much better value longer-stay rates and is only a short walk away.) Use the Transport Direct website (enter the destination postcode EH1 2LF) for exact locations of car parks etc.
