Take Some Local Bus Trips
Consider joining Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland, then you will have free entry into all their properties (there are absolutely heaps of places to visit). TIP: If you are a member of a National Trust in another country, you may have reciprocal rights for free visits to NTS properties, check before leaving home!
Catch a local bus
Local Bus Journeys (to fill in a few spare hours, or just to get around town). Ask drivers where to alight. Sit upstairs, at the front of the bus, for best views. Buy tickets onboard, Adult Single £1.50, Child 70pence, OR the day passes at £3.50 per person (Child £2) are excellent value. Two children Under 5 can travel free. #15 BUS: Catch bus in Lothian Road, at the bus stop near Ali's Cave. 30 minutes journey to Penicuik (passes the Ski Centre). Stay on the bus for return trip via Roslyn Chapel.
#11 BUS: Goes down Lothian Road into Princes Street. ASk the driver where to get off to CHANGE to #26 or #12 BUS: This stops at the back entrance of Jenners, the Hertz Car Depot and then goes down London Road. It passes the top of Easter Road, passes Meadowbank shopping centre and Meadowank stadium (where good antique fairs are held!) and then goes on to Portobello. You can walk to Portobello beach easily from the bus stop, its only a few minutes.
#35 BUS: Goes up to and right down The Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyrood House. Goes via George IV Bridge. Good places to get off are The Royal Museum (stops outside Elephant House); and the Tron (near middle of Royal Mile). The bus returns via Lauriston Place (enroute to Edinburgh Airport), goes down Lady Lawson Street and turns left up into West Port, it proceeds into Fountainbridge (Lothian House guests alight at the stop just before Lothian Road!).
#34 BUS: Catch bus from stop outside the Filmhouse. 35 minutes down to Ocean Terminal (Royal Yacht Britannia). Goes via Princes Street, down the top of Leith Walk, along London Road, into Great Junction Street and on through Leith's residential areas to Ocean Terminal. (It also stops at Meadowbank Retail Park en route.) On the return journey alight at the Clock, outside the Usher Hall in Lothian Road, bus proceeds on around into Fountainbridge and stops at Fountainpark (UGC Cinema-lots of festival films shown here). The bus then goes out along the Calder Road, stopping at Napier & Stevenson Colleges, Heriot Watt & their Conference Centre and the Park and Ride. This route has nice views of the Pentland Hills.
