Answers to Frequently Asked Questions
What are 'self-catering' rentals?
These are private properties being offered to visitors for short stays and holidays. They should be fully self-contained, with private facilities for your exclusive use. Linen and towels are usually provided. There is normally no food service with self-catering properties (although we usually include a welcome pack for our guests, which contains basic foods for your arrival breakfast etc). There is no daily cleaning service provided, it is up to you to make your beds and keep the property as tidy as you require. (A thorough clean is conducted between all bookings.)
What does it mean when a property advertises a 'Star' level?
There is an official Grading & Classification process available through the Scottish Tourist Board (now VisitScotland) for Hotels, Guest Houses, B&B's, Self-Catering properties etc.
However, their assessment is very strict and, as it is NOT mandatory, some owners do not register for this. TIP To be guaranteed of quality, ask the properties you are considering whether or not they have a Star grading. We have a Four Star Self-Catering award.
Is there any car parking attached to the property?
The apartment is located in an historic area and was constructed long before cars were an integral part of every household, so therefore no onsite parking is available. However, Lothian House is right in the city centre, so there are plenty of places where you can park close by. Details are here.
Is the apartment close to a train station?
Yes, Edinburgh's main Waverley Station is only about a 15 minute walk away, but as the city can be very distracting to navigate through, we recommend a taxi on arrival - it is easiest with luggage and is quite inexpensive. Edinburgh's other train station, Haymarket Station, is only 10 minutes walk away, but there are a lot of stairs to climb when exiting that station, which can be difficult if you are carrying luggage. Also, sometimes there is a wait for taxis on the rank at Haymarket, whereas these are more readily available at the Waverley rank.
How long will it take us to get to the apartment from Edinburgh Airport?
The journey time by shuttle bus or taxi is usually around 25-30 minutes, possibly a bit longer at peak traffic times.
Will it take us long to clear customs & collect our luggage at Edinburgh Airport?
Edinburgh is a small airport, so the clearing process is usually quite quick. Most people are out of the terminal within 30-40 minutes, all running smoothly.
Can you recommend a tour company to take us on day trips during our visit?
Yes, we recommend Gray Line and can book tours for you, so that they will pick you up outside Lothian House, which helps to get your tour day off to a great start! Details are here.
We are thinking of hiring a car for our time in Edinburgh, will this be useful?
You will not need a car for sightseeing within the city centre, as everything is within easy walking distance of the apartment and public transport passes the front door. However, if you plan to drive outwith the city centre then a car will be very useful, some suggestions for nice places to go are here.
We are having trouble understanding UK currency, can you help us please?
The UK currency is confusing, so we compiled some currency information to help you here.
Can you recommend somewhere special for us to have dinner?
Yes, there are plenty of excellent restaurants in the area. We have a few favourites listed under 'Recommended Dining' here.
We have not visited Edinburgh before, can you suggest things for us to do please?
Yes, there are so many things to see and do in Edinburgh you could spend a lifetime here and still not get bored! We have listed a few of our favourite things here.
I love shopping, can you suggest some good shopping precincts close by please?
Shopping in Edinburgh is very easy as there are all kinds of shops scattered throughout the city centre. There are also shopping centres which are easy to reach by public bus. Some shopping information is here.
We have a very well behaved little dog, can we bring him with us please?
We are animal lovers too, but regrettably cannot accept pets of any kind in our accommodation, under any circumstances. We advertise our property as being suitable for people with allergies and therefore cannot make any exceptions regarding this. Some places will accept pets though and we can suggest ways that you can find out about them.
QUESTIONS ABOUT RENTING THIS APARTMENT
How do I know this rental is legitimate?
This is a great concern for people these days, as there are so many properties listed for 'self-catering' now, particularly in cities like Edinburgh. However, if you are considering renting our apartment you can easily check our bona-fide Four Star Self-Catering credentials. We are members of, and are listed on the official websites of, the Association of Scotland's Self-Caterers (www.embracescotland.co.uk) and also the Scottish Tourist Board (now VisitScotland) (www.visitscotland.com)
How do I make a reservation?

How will we be able to find Apartment 39 Lothian House when we get to Edinburgh?
The apartment is right in the city centre, at the street address 124 Lothian Road, but as the entrance is easy to miss, see these details so you will be well prepared on your arrival day.
How do we get the keys to the apartment?
We will arrange in advance for you to be met at the apartment upon your arrival. You will receive a personal welcome, will be shown around the property and then given 2 sets of keys.
Do you cater for people with allergies?
Yes, all our bedding is non-allergenic, pillows and duvets are covered with anti-allergy protectors and we launder all our linen in effective gentle detergents. All floral displays in the apartment are high quality artificial arrangements. Pets are not accepted and smoking is strictly forbidden within the apartment, so our furniture and soft furnishings are not affected by residual allergens. We are also fastidious about general cleanliness & presentation!
What are the rental payment terms?
For advance bookings, a non-refundable deposit of £100 is payable within 10 days of us confirming your tentative booking, the balance of your accommodation charges will then be due 6 weeks prior to your arrival date. For short notice bookings, payment in full will be due at the time we confirm your reservation. Sometimes we can make alternative payment arrangements, depending upon the circumstances. We are always willing to discuss guests' preferences in all aspects of the service we provide.
Are there set arrival and departure times?
We have a generally preferred time frame for check-ins between 4pm-7.30pm, however we realise that travel itineraries often will not suit these times, and then we make special arrangements for our guests. Departure is usually by 10am, but again, we will try and suit individual requests where possible.
