The Ionian Islands Region

The "Ionians" are one of the most famous group of islands in Greece, and are made up of seven constituents, of which Corfu is one.  They are located down the west coast of Greece, with Corfu as the top island, or the one furthest north.  It is known as one of the most beautiful islands, with its mountains, beautiful beaches and spectacular landscapes.  Corfu has been named the Green Island, notably because of the abundance of Cyprus trees and olive groves that thrive throught the scorching summer due to its heavy winter rainfall.

Corfu has been ruled by many countries, including France, England and Italy, and as such its culture and architecture has been influenced by them.  From the pretty narrow streets embellished with tavernas, to the elegant Venetian buildings, Corfu is both interesting and breathtaking.

Much of the island is still unspoilt, especially towards the north of the island in places such as Agios Stefanos, Kouloura and Kaminiki.  These pebble beaches are distinctive to the east side of the island, whereas the opposite side of Corfu is known for its long sandy beaches, such as Glyfada, Mirtiotissa and Hallikounas.

Why not hire a boat and discover the beautiful secret coves and picturesque coast line, stopping around lunctime to dine at one of the many traditional beach tavernas, offering locally caught fish and traditional dishes.
